Frequently asked questions
Where is Menzies?
Menzies is located in remote Western Australia 725km from our state capital Perth and 130km from the regional city of Kalgoorlie.
Menzies was established in 1895 shortly after gold was found by two prospectors Leslie Robert Menzies and John McDonald. They were first to take up a lease here in October 1894, naming it the 'Lady Shenton'.
In 1895 the land around the town was sold and by 1896 the town of Menzies soon started to emerge out of the dirt of the Goldfields. By 1900 Menzies had a population of approximately 10,000 with thirteen pubs and two breweries. Not much of the old booming mining town remains with only a few of the historic buildings still standing.
Currently Menzies is home to approximately 120 people with a cafe, pub, school and now gallery. These days Menzies is known as the stopping point along the way to the famous sculptures by Antony Gormley on Lake Ballard.
